As early as 1908, after the discovery of diamonds in German Southwest Africa, a diamond rush erupted in Lüderitz, attracting a large number of young people with dreams of diamonds to gather in the desert of Namibia. Following this, the small town of Kolmanskop rapidly developed into a typical German-style small town, where schools, hospitals, entertainment venues, and large residential areas were built. It was the first city in Africa to have electric trams, and the first X-ray machine in the southern hemisphere also operated here.

However, the good times did not last long. With the rise of the Oranjemund diamond mining area and a significant drop in diamond prices after World War II, this once prosperous town gradually declined. In 1956, the last batch of residents evacuated the city, leading to Kolmanskop being completely abandoned and submerged in a sea of sand, becoming a true ghost town.
