Greenwood Great House was established in 1800 and has a history of over 210 years. It was once the residence of the renowned English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning and is one of the best-preserved mansions in Jamaica. Today, Greenwood Great House is home to the finest antique museum in the Caribbean, still showcasing its original furniture and housing a collection of Jamaica’s rarest musical instruments and books.
Greenwood Great House holds significant historical importance for two main reasons. Firstly, after Jamaica was conquered by the Spanish in 1655, it came into the possession of Hersey Barrett who used the estate to have over 2000 slaves produce sugar on a large scale, which remained unscathed during a major fire in 1830. The second reason is that there are two ghosts at Greenwood Great House, and their ghostly figures have been depicted—one is a female slave and the other is a woman wearing gray attire.
Visitors to Greenwood Great House will be transported back to the era of “King Sugar” and plantation life, where plantation owners resided in grand houses atop hills, offering panoramic views of the plantation landscapes and the labor conditions of the workers, providing a deeper understanding of history.
