The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 and is located in the Kafu River Basin area of Nakasongola District, Uganda, only 176 kilometers away from the capital city Kampala. It is a private, non-profit animal conservation area. As of 2010, the sanctuary remains the only rhino conservation base in Uganda.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary aims to steadily increase the rhino population by providing a natural habitat for rhinos, raising and protecting them, and gradually introducing them into Uganda’s national parks. Through visitation, guidance, and publicity, the sanctuary aims to raise awareness of rhino conservation among visitors. Currently, the sanctuary has specialized tour guides, as well as a range of service facilities such as restaurants, camping sites, and lounges, to meet the needs of visitors without disturbing the rhinos’ habitat. In addition to rhinos, the sanctuary is home to 20 other animal species including monkeys, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species. Multiple guards are on duty 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of these animals and visitors alike.
