Târgu Jiu is located on the banks of the Jiu River in Romania, belonging to the region of Wallachia, and is the capital of Gorj County. The city’s name comes from the Jiu River that runs through the city, and during World War II, a concentration camp was once established here.
The Jiu Bridge is the most iconic and famous bridge in Târgu Jiu, a historic truss bridge spanning the Jiu River, built in 1896, with a total of five arches. The city has three major monuments, namely the Endless Column, the Gate of the Kiss, and the Table of Silence. The Endless Column is erected in memory of the Romanian soldiers and is considered a representative of modern art. The Table of Silence consists of a stone table and hourglass-shaped stone chairs surrounding it, symbolizing time.
