Veliko Tarnovo is a city in central northern Bulgaria, located on the banks of the Yantra River. It is the capital and administrative center of Veliko Tarnovo Province. This city is famous for being the former capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, one of the country’s three major ancient capitals, and currently serves as an important political, economic, educational, and cultural hub in northern Bulgaria.
Veliko Tarnovo boasts multiple historical sites and landmarks, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists. The ancient city is situated on the hills of Tsarevets and Trapezitsa, with the Yantra River winding between them, now designated as a key protected area and tourist destination. The Tsarevets Fortress is located on a small hill, serving as a significant military stronghold during the Second Bulgarian Empire and the site of the royal palace. On the Trapezitsa Hill, several noble chapels were built, with 17 still preserved to this day. Notable churches include the Church of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Church of Saint George, and the Church of Saint Dimitry.
