The Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology was established in 1974 and only opened to the public in 1982, making it the oldest museum in the English-speaking Caribbean. The museum is named after Dr. Walter Roth, in recognition of his significant contributions to archaeology.
As a non-profit institution, the museum aims to collect, exhibit, and preserve items related to Guyanese culture in order to promote cultural knowledge of Guyana’s indigenous peoples. The museum is housed in an elegant wooden building with three floors, reportedly built in 1890. Its collection primarily consists of anthropological and archaeological finds related to the early indigenous peoples’ way of life.
