The Las Lajas Sanctuary is located in Ipiales, Nariño Department, Colombia, situated in a canyon formed by the Guáitara River. It is the only church in the world built in a valley, named after a type of sedimentary shale rock. Regarded as one of the most beautiful churches in the world, it is a must-visit destination for everyone during their lifetime.
Constructed in 1916, the Las Lajas Sanctuary is a Roman Catholic church featuring Gothic Revival architecture. There is an interesting story behind the construction of the church. In 1754, an American woman named Maria Mueces and her deaf-mute daughter were trapped in the valley during a storm. Unexpectedly, the daughter spoke, saying “friends are calling me,” and saw the Virgin Mary appear on a stone. They were later found and rescued on a large rock. The first church in the valley was built in the 18th century, replaced in 1802, and the current church was built in 1916, soaring high in the deep canyon at over 100 meters. A 50-meter high bridge connects the church to the edge of the canyon, providing easy access for visitors and worshippers.
